It’s nearly impossible to not hear about going green, the 3 Rs (reduce reuse recycle) and the infinite ways in which you can help the planet. For your next home decorating or landscaping project, we wanted to give you 5 reasons why we are buzzing about Bamboo and what makes it so great!

1) Bamboo is STRONG
Different species of bamboo are stronger than oak, harder than cedar and have the tensional strength comparable to steel. By purchasing bamboo, you’re getting a quality building material at a fraction of the cost, and is also incredibly versatile.

2) Bamboo is GREEN
Being that bamboo is not a woody tree but in fact a weed like grass, it grows at an incredibly fast rate. Unlike traditional trees that can take years or decades to grow, Bamboo can be grown and harvested at a much quicker rate. It’s a renewable resource that serves as an alternative material that can be used for an infinite number of possibilities for goods.

3)Bamboo is VERSATILE
From sheets to cutting boards, fencing, tiki bars, furniture and so much more, Bamboo is being used world wide in various types of production. You can even customize your own building project with rolls of fencing or individual poles.

4)Bamboo is AFFORDABLE
Let’s face it, economic times have not been at their greatest in the past few years and investing in upgrading your home or landscape can be a hefty investment. Bamboo offers an affordable way to instantly give your home and garden that tropical or zen revival. Replacing a wall or fencing around your yard can also be quite expensive but at times necessary if you’re looking to sell your home or are required by home associations; Bamboo fencing can offer a cost effective and easy solution.
5)Bamboo is an ECONOMIC SOURCE
Rural and tropical environments are prime places for Bamboo to grow, but some of these areas are also some of the poorest areas in the world. Bamboo has become a viable economic resource for developing countries, providing jobs and a livelihood for many people. In addition to the economical benefits, the ecological ones are extremely prevalent as well, by reducing industrial and urbanization impacts.
The advantages and possibilities when it comes to bamboo are endless. The support and promotion of eco friendly products helps individuals today have a viable livelihood, while it is also a renewable resource that will also preserve natural resources for future generations.

One of the most frequent questions we get asked on a daily basis is “can I use your tropical decor for indoors?” Although our popular bamboo products, pottery and thatch items are built to be able to handle the outdoor environment, their function is just as versatile indoors. Here are some tips on how to create that tropical flare to any room.
Color and Texture
In our past articles we’ve mentioned that one of the first things before decorating anything or anywhere, you want to establish a color scheme. Since your aim is a tropical look, you will want natural tones that exist in items such as bamboo, thatch or bamboo rugs and contrast them with bright and bold island colors such as red, yellow, pinks and blues. Keep in mind that this does not mean to use every bright color palette available, it’s best to select a couple and work in variations of each. Flowers, pottery, and fountains have a magical way of adding color without being overbearing. Items such as bamboo poles and slats can add texture by acting as moldings along your ceilings and floor. You can even turn your entire room into one big Tiki hut, by lining a runner roll of thatch along the wall ceilings.
Remember that since you are using neutral tones in your bamboo and thatch, that you want to use a contrasting paint color for your walls. Dark chocolate browns, blues and greens work wonderfully against neutral tones.
Accents and Details

The easiest way to infuse tropical flare into a room, is through an array of accessories such as Tiki Signs or Tiki Statues. Although the general idea is to bring out an island look to the space, you want to think about the feeling you want to get from this area. Various tiki statues promote everything from love, luck, happiness to even protection. Some individuals prefer to have a relaxing peaceful area that they can escape to in order to have a stay at home vacation. Others may enjoy a lively room that will play music and entertain company. Depending on your purpose, your decorating will follow accordingly.
Bamboo panels for your wall with additions of indoor palm trees will help provide that relaxing atmosphere. For a lively fun area that screams “entertainment”, you may want to hang up some Polynesian wall art or tiki signs with fun slogans such as “Tiki Bar, Island Bar, Surf’s Up or even Clothing Optional.”
So the next time you’re in our store or surfing through our website and shopping to create that backyard paradise, have an extra look at items that will help you bring that paradise indoors as well.

What makes Labor Day such a great holiday is that it is one of the rare holidays where you know exactly which day of the week it will fall on, a Monday, which is quite the added bonus to what is usually a two day weekend. This September 7th, with some creative thinking you can add some spice to your typical bbq, or make your beach or park outing into a memorable event.
BBQ

Rather than your just winging a backyard BBQ with friends or family that may “stop by”, plan out a themed event such as “Tiki Totem Party” or “Tropical Labor Day Getaway.” The idea of throwing an organized party may seem like a lot of work, but a little pre-thought can actually help in many ways. By officially inviting guests and planning an event, guests are more likely to commit to the time and event, which also provides you with a good idea of how many people to provide food and drinks for. Your theme could also be a potluck which would relieve a lot of the preparation work from you, and also allow for a variety of tasty items from all your guests. Having guests show up in themed wear such as Hawaiian shirts or Sarongs will add life to the event and will help in bringing everyone together in the festivities.
Decorating does not necessarily require a big budget or weeks of setting up. Decorative items such as Tiki statues, bamboo fencing, or thatch, instantly add a dash of tropical flavor to any setting, without requiring much installation and once the event is over, the same décor can still be used for your home and garden. Table cloths, napkins and disposable cups and plates are inexpensive ways to add color to your table setting and compliment your theme.
For entertainment, you can play island music in the background, have a Tiki Bar set up serving drinks, or even add in some games.
Outdoor Activities

This year if you plan on taking your Labor Day festivities to a park or the beach, make it an outdoor event. The extended weekend makes it perfect to have a short vacation to enjoy activities such as rock climbing, biking, rollerblading, swimming, kayaking or hiking. You may even want to take the weekend to go camping with friends and family to get away from the busy city. For a relaxing, stress-free weekend make sure you bring proper equipment, necessary materials and plan your travel times to avoid traffic from travelers coming and leaving.
Fireworks

Nothing adds more magic to a holiday than the bright colors and magical display of fireworks. Although fireworks are generally associated with holidays such as New Years and 4th of July, many commercial establishments do have a display of fireworks for Labor Day as well. Check your local listings for scheduling and locations.
Whatever your plans may be this coming Labor Day, make sure you take the time to relax and enjoy quality time with friends and family. Many times we get caught up in life’s daily routines and don’t allot for enough quality moments with those we love. So pick your theme, activities and location and have a wonderful Labor Day weekend.

Some of the greatest things about summer include longer sunny days and spending time enjoying life with those we love. Summer getaways are grand but arranging the time and budget can be another job in itself. What if you could have your own stay-cation this summer, where you could create a little bit of paradise right in your own backyard? The common obstacles that come up when it comes to re-decorating or sprucing up a space are time and money.
Just like the cooking shows that show you how to make meals with five ingredients or less, or in fewer than 30 minutes, we wanted to apply that same formula to decorating your backyard. There are five simple things that you can do, in less than a day, to brighten up your backyard and turn it into a place where you can escape from the rest of the world.

1) Cozying Up Your Patio
Being that your patio is the first thing you set foot upon when you walk into your backyard, it’s also the best place to start decorating. Your patio plays a big part in landscaping as it sets and starts the atmosphere for the rest of your yard. It is also a central gathering place where you and your family spend time. Accessorizing your patio with decorative art pieces such as tiki statues or a tiki bar, instantly transform the look of a space into a fun island theme. Accessories such as hanging art, wind chimes and vibrant colored throw pillows can also help paint some life into a dreary patio setting. Got some old patio furniture? Rather than spending a lot of money on new furniture, try restoring the pieces you have with some paint and accents. An old concrete table can be restored into a beautiful mosaic table with some old tile pieces.

2) Garden Life
Nothing gives a backyard more life and spirit than by adding life through garden decor. Plants have a magical way of painting a landscape with texture and color. For those that don’t necessarily have a green thumb, and don’t want to wait for the germination process, you can purchase plants that are already grown and transfer them to your garden. It’s important to choose plants based on your climate. For dryer areas, drought resistant plants will minimize your water expenditure and for colder areas perennial plants typically re-grow each year or lives more than two years, so you don’t have to plant as much or as often.

3) Making Simple Additions
Sometimes making simple changes can make a huge difference in how your backyard looks. Rather than replacing an old chain or wooden fence, you cover it with a new bamboo one. Old tables or umbrellas can be dressed up with Mexican or African thatch for that tropical look. Adding a water feature is another way to add atmosphere and bring harmony to your backyard with the sound of water.
4) Lighting
Your backyard is not just for enjoying sunny days but also calm and alluring nights. Nothing adds mood and ambiance like lighting to highlight your backyard’s most prominent features. You don’t need to expend a big budget to do this. A string of twinkle lights, tiki torches, path lamps, or stationary lamps, when well placed can do the trick.
5) De-Clutter
Though this is number 5 on this list, it is just as equally, if not more important the rest. You can have a beautiful garden with polished furniture and a flowing fountain, but clutter and debris can mask your once immaculate backyard and make it seem old and dull. Spend a day clearing leaves, sweeping the patio, trimming your plants and you’ll be surprised how much detail can be nullified by a mess.
Whether you just need time away from work, or special moments with loved ones, remember that sometimes the best getaway is only a few steps away, that you can create with a small budget and limited time. So next time bring out a refreshing drink or a glass of wine, set up some candles and fresh flowers, take in the air and find some reprieve in your backyard stay-cation.
