Save Water This Summer

August 2nd, 2010

We are all aware of the country’s dire need for clean water. The summer months are especially tough for dry southern areas, including southern California and the entire southwest. A few simple changes can affect your overall water use immensely. This summer, make the most of your water consumption with the following tips on water conservation.

  • Turn off the faucet – Whether you’re brushing your teeth, shaving or cooking, simply turning the water off when you’re not directly using it can save untold gallons.

  • Reuse where you can – Catch the water your shower wastes while you’re waiting for the temperature to warm up. This water can be reused to water houseplants or for pets.
  • Go natural – Collect rain. Water collection units are a great way to catch and store 40-80 gallons of water at a time. Additionally, these units can serve as decorative accents and are easily camouflaged so they will not ruin your outdoor aesthetic.

  • Work with nature, not against it – Water the lawn early in the morning. By getting up a few minutes earlier, you cash in on the help provided by natural dew that accumulates on grass and other plants and can save up to 25 gallons of water a day.
  • Wait – Only wash full loads of laundry or dishes. By just waiting for enough dirty items to accumulate you can save 15 to 50 gallons of water per load.

  • Get in and get out – Shortening showers by only one minute saves up to 5 gallons a day.
  • Sweep - Use a broom to clean off sidewalks and driveways. Hosing them down just wastes water that can be used for the lawn or washing the car. It also adds more sewage to storm drains which ultimately flow into the ocean. Sweeping helps save water and prevents water pollution.

  • Fake is great – Install artificial grass. With ever expanding technology, artificial turf looks better and feels more natural than ever before. Plus, it goes without saying that it requires absolutely zero watering to maintain its color and quality.

  • Take a page from Mother Nature’s playbook – Use native plants in your outdoor landscaping. Plants that are indigenous to your area typically require little care and water. Save yourself time and save the community some water while still maintaining a natural outdoor feel in your backyard or patio.

  • Take up space - Decorative fountains can be a great centerpiece for a patio or lawn and can take up space where grass might normally be needed. While fountains do require some water initially, they require little refilling and provide aesthetic appeal and soothing tones while not wasting water.

To be sure, one individual or household is not expected to take advantage of 100% of this advice. However, if everyone does a little to help conserve water, we will all be doing ourselves, our communities and our planet a big favor. Do your share this summer to ensure that our water sources are around for generations to come.

The Benefits of Solar Lighting

July 26th, 2010

As the summer months drift lazily on, there are more and more opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Whether entertaining guests in your backyard or simply sitting solo with a good book into the evening is your style, you’re certain to run into a classic summer problem: the weather is still warm and comfortable, but the sun has gone down, forcing you to retreat indoors. Once again, Backyard Xscapes has the answer to your most vexing questions – the use of solar lights can easily and cost-effectively solve your outdoor lighting dilemma.

Solar lights capitalize on one of the Earth’s most reusable resources –the sun. A solar panel within the unit “stores” the energy from the sun’s rays during the day and subsequently emits this energy through LED light bulbs at night. Most solar lights turn off and on automatically with the help of  high-tech darkness sensors, making them both easy to use, waste free and an integral part of any intention to “go green.”

To make your life even simpler, solar lights don’t require a connection to the house power source and therefore do not require any confusing wiring or outlet planning. Positioning is the only tactical consideration as the bulbs require direct sunlight during the day in order to operate at full capacity at night.  They usually consist of two or less parts making them easy to assemble, easy to move and easy to install.

To add to the growing list of benefits to solar lighting, they will not add to your electric bill, produce environmentally harmful emissions or become dangerous in any way. Children and pets cannot be electrocuted or burned because there is no electricity involved and the bulbs are always cool to the touch. The lights can be placed anywhere that is lit by direct sunlight during the day, with no consideration for potential water spills or contact with upholstery or other flammable materials.

Because these lights are so safe, they are also extremely versatile. Solar lights can be used as “place markers” to illuminate potentially dangerous objects like rocks or piping at night, they look great lined up along walkways or down stairs and can even be used to create ambient light for party or dinner areas. They come in enumerable styles, shapes and colors, so you’re sure to find one perfectly suited for your lighting needs.

At Backyard Xscapes, we are always looking for ways to make your life easier, more cost effective and more environmentally friendly. The installation of solar lights is not only a clean and safe alternative to electrical lighting, but will also wind up saving you money in the long run. The environment will thank you too.

Hide Anything in Your Backyard

July 19th, 2010

Do you ever look out into your backyard and wish that that unsightly eyesore ruining your perfect landscape would magically disappear? Artificial rocks are a perfect to solution to any visual conundrum. With both natural looking and aesthetically appealing they are also durable, sturdy and ready for anything. As they come in a variety of shapes and colors, the ideal fit is not difficult to find. Here are some ideas for how to take your backyard or walkway from an eyesore to eye candy.

Hide Outdoor Plumbing
Use a rock to hide ugly centrifugal pumps, irrigation valves or septic lids or cleanouts. These outdoor necessities definitely have their purpose in our lives and we probably would miss them if they were gone; however, we don’t necessarily have them in sight for them to do their job. Not only do they take away from the visual purity of our landscapes, but they can also be dangerous if located in a busy walking area or if small children play near them. A low to the ground rock is an easy solution. Not only does it eliminate the eye sore, but it can also completely change the focal point of your landscape. Now, instead of wishing the traces of indoor plumbing would disappear, you can easily forget about them.

Address Plaques
Do people visiting your home ever complain that they can’t read the faded address number spray painted on the curb or can’t find the numbers hung next to the garage? Make things easier for everyone by installing an address plaque rock. The unique flat surface lends itself nicely to the addition of numbers or characters while the size, shape and color of the rock still look and feel like the real thing. Add a solar powered lighting source next to the rock and never hear a guest complain about driving aimlessly up and down the street looking for your house again.

Pool equipment
We all love our backyard pools…or our neighbor’s pools. Again though, there are certain upkeep and plumbing realities that may spoil the aesthetic beauty we’ve tried so hard to achieve in our backyards. Pool filters, pump equipment and even large wells can be completely hidden from view with some of the larger rock models. So instead of trying to camoflague unattractive hardware with a good imagination, simply cover the whole thing up with a easy-to-install and readily relocated rock.

Hoses
Rocks aren’t the only way to hide all those things you’d rather not look at. A unique turtle or frog shaped hose hider makes outdoor clean-up a snap while cleverly disguising clutter and potentially dangerous gardening tools and hoses. Stop looking at shovels, picks, trowels and hoses strewn about the yard and hide them nicely, neatly and cleanly under a cute little garden animal.

Sometimes you just need to change the flavor of your backyard, or decorate an empty space. A rock can be an understated accent to a garden scene or a flower bed that will not take away from the natural beauty. The authentic colors and real life shapes make these rocks perfect additions to any patio, backyard or walkway and can be easily moved as easily and as often as you change your mind.

Featured in Outdoor Rooms Magazine

May 18th, 2010

Although temperatures may be warming and it may feel like summer’s upon us, the official day of summer isn’t until June 21st, which gives you just enough time to give your backyard that new look.  Outdoor Rooms is a Better Homes and Gardens special interest publication and their theme for this months magazine is “Take a Vacation in Your Own Backyard.” Throughout this issue, they are giving readers a “Passport to Style” through different types of backyards and since Backyard X-Scapes is all about helping you to “Create Your Great Escape,” they featured many of our products.

Jane Austin McKeon (Outdoor Rooms Editor) describes the essence of summer entertaining and backyard enjoyment perfectly.
My favorite time of year to entertain is summer.  A barefoot and blue jeans sort of girl, I would much rather wave the neighbors over for a spur-of-the-moment glass of wine on the front porch or serve a picnic-style supper for my family on the deck than put a lot of planning and primping into a fancy dining room affair. Backyards cater to impromptu entertaining.

Tropical flare and that “Polynesian Pop” never goes out of style.  Outdoor rooms showed that with some colorful elements, playful arrangements and various lively foliage, you can create a vibrant island getaway right in your backyard.  Some of the products used included Tiki Signs, Bamboo Signs, an African Thatch umbrella kit, a stainless steel BBQ island, tiki statues, and a pool table for easy entertaining.

Some key components in creating your outdoor island paradise include:
Water: The sounds of falling water create a relaxing ambiance while also visually adding movement to your still backyard.
Structure:
Umbrella kits, awnings and Tiki Bars, provide more than just shade to the elements.  They are the physical focal points that instantly transform your backyard into the desired theme, while also creating a gathering location for entertaining.
Artwork: Paintings can create dimension, set a theme, and act like windows in opening or containing certain spaces.  If you happen to live in a climate that cannot grow certain tropical plants, trying hanging up artwork that includes the same texture and color qualities.
Decor: One of the hardest things in re-decorating is sticking to one consistent theme.  While some items can work with multiple themes, such as bamboo can be used for an Asian infused garden or a Tropical Paradise, others may not be so versatile.  For the tropical look, decorate with tiki masks or tiki statues. If you have an old fence that doesn’t compliment your desired theme, bamboo fencing can be an inexpensive solution that doesn’t require that much investment or commitment.

Continuing with the tropical theme, also featured were our products that can help to “Tiki-ify” your backyard.  Products shown include our 12″ Tiki Statue, African Thatch umbrella kit, Tiki Signs and a bamboo bench.

To see all of the wonderful backyard ideas and more of how our products were used, pick up the summer issue of Outdoor Rooms magazine.

Benefits of Artificial Grass

September 2nd, 2009

After a week’s worth of work, weekends are typically thought of as a time to relax, spend time with loved ones or just enjoy the free moments available. Though it seems that with our daily routines and endless lists of errands, weekends seem more about catching up on tasks then relaxing.

The truth is that although your home is an escape and a piece of paradise away from the rest of the world, there is a lot of work that can go into the upkeep especially when it comes to the landscape. Having natural grass as part of your backyard landscape can provide a lot of enjoyable features, but also produce an array of chores in maintenance. Spending weekend mornings lugging out the lawn mower to mow the lawn, worrying about animals digging or pets ruining the landscape are just a few of the many hassles in maintaining a natural grass lawn.

Artificial grass is a growing trend not just for home owners but for professional sports establishments, golf courses, parks, educational institutions and even theme parks. The increase in demand has brought for the production of varying types of grass to satisfy any need and some that look almost identical, if not better, than real grass.

Benefiting the Environment

lawnmowing

Driving a low emission vehicle, switching to low energy light bulbs, using re-usable fabric grocery shopping bags and recycling are some of the ways in which many people are “going green”. While there are many additional things that can be done within the home to help the planet, installing artificial grass can create one of the biggest methods of being more eco-friendly, and also saving money. It is said that the emissions from running a lawn mower for an hour is almost the same amount as driving a car for 100 miles. While cars have features and additions to reduce emissions, lawn mowers do not. In addition to emissions, by installing artificial grass, you will no longer need to water the lawn. 30% of water usage goes to sustaining landscapes. By reducing your water usage you are also helping to conserve a natural resource. Another key element is that you will no longer need to use pesticides and fertilizers which can harm animals and sometimes run off into storm drains.

Saving Money

money
Whenever assessing costs for landscaping and upgrades for the home, one of the biggest things to consider for any modification is the value you are receiving. Although artificial turf may be a larger investment in the beginning, you will get a return on your investment from the money you are saving in the long run. There is the good old saying “Time is Money” which is a very solid truth. The time in maintaining your lawn could be utilized in other activities. In addition to time, you are also saving money on water, energy, and equipment costs. Sprinkler systems are not only expensive but can be laborious to install and repair. You will no longer need to purchase soil, fertilizer, pesticides or require professional landscaping services. Artificial grass is durable and will last lifetimes longer than natural grass.

All Around Benefits

time
Not only is artificial grass easy to install but it’s also great for kids and pets. Chemicals, grass treatments, fertilizers and pesticides can not only harm insects but also your pets. Also with turf, you no longer have to worry about insects or pests digging up your grass. Pets can take care of their business on the turf, and unlike natural grass, the urine or feces won’t kill or affect the look of the synthetic grass. The grass is permeable so liquids will flow through and can be hosed off. To clean the synthetic grass you can use a blower or hose whenever needed.

Imagine being able to leave on vacation and not have to worry about mowing the lawn or watering it. Your grass can stay green all season long.

Remember, whatever your upgrade or addition to your home may be, always make a plan first and weigh out all your costs, up front and long term, to decide what may have the better investment.

Decorating in a Day – 5 Steps to Brightening Your Backyard

July 29th, 2009

Some of the greatest things about summer include longer sunny days and spending time enjoying life with those we love. Summer getaways are grand but arranging the time and budget can be another job in itself. What if you could have your own stay-cation this summer, where you could create a little bit of paradise right in your own backyard? The common obstacles that come up when it comes to re-decorating or sprucing up a space are time and money.

Just like the cooking shows that show you how to make meals with five ingredients or less, or in fewer than 30 minutes, we wanted to apply that same formula to decorating your backyard. There are five simple things that you can do, in less than a day, to brighten up your backyard and turn it into a place where you can escape from the rest of the world.

1) Cozying Up Your Patio
Being that your patio is the first thing you set foot upon when you walk into your backyard, it’s also the best place to start decorating. Your patio plays a big part in landscaping as it sets and starts the atmosphere for the rest of your yard. It is also a central gathering place where you and your family spend time. Accessorizing your patio with decorative art pieces such as tiki statues or a tiki bar, instantly transform the look of a space into a fun island theme. Accessories such as hanging art, wind chimes and vibrant colored throw pillows can also help paint some life into a dreary patio setting. Got some old patio furniture? Rather than spending a lot of money on new furniture, try restoring the pieces you have with some paint and accents. An old concrete table can be restored into a beautiful mosaic table with some old tile pieces.

2) Garden Life
Nothing gives a backyard more life and spirit than by adding life through garden decor. Plants have a magical way of painting a landscape with texture and color. For those that don’t necessarily have a green thumb, and don’t want to wait for the germination process, you can purchase plants that are already grown and transfer them to your garden. It’s important to choose plants based on your climate. For dryer areas, drought resistant plants will minimize your water expenditure and for colder areas perennial plants typically re-grow each year or lives more than two years, so you don’t have to plant as much or as often.

3) Making Simple Additions
Sometimes making simple changes can make a huge difference in how your backyard looks. Rather than replacing an old chain or wooden fence, you cover it with a new bamboo one. Old tables or umbrellas can be dressed up with Mexican or African thatch for that tropical look. Adding a water feature is another way to add atmosphere and bring harmony to your backyard with the sound of water.

4) Lighting
Your backyard is not just for enjoying sunny days but also calm and alluring nights. Nothing adds mood and ambiance like lighting to highlight your backyard’s most prominent features. You don’t need to expend a big budget to do this. A string of twinkle lights, tiki torches, path lamps, or stationary lamps, when well placed can do the trick.

5) De-Clutter
Though this is number 5 on this list, it is just as equally, if not more important the rest. You can have a beautiful garden with polished furniture and a flowing fountain, but clutter and debris can mask your once immaculate backyard and make it seem old and dull. Spend a day clearing leaves, sweeping the patio, trimming your plants and you’ll be surprised how much detail can be nullified by a mess.

Whether you just need time away from work, or special moments with loved ones, remember that sometimes the best getaway is only a few steps away, that you can create with a small budget and limited time. So next time bring out a refreshing drink or a glass of wine, set up some candles and fresh flowers, take in the air and find some reprieve in your backyard stay-cation.

How to Create Your Own Backyard Tropical Paradise

July 8th, 2009

tropical_backyardtropical_pool_sm

Often time’s people get intimidated about landscaping or tackling a project, but creating a tropically themed backyard can actually be fun and easy.

Backyard furniture can add life and style to any backyard. One of the first ways to get started is by first evaluating the size of the space being enhanced and then an area of focus. This area of focus could be a patio, a relaxing area of the yard, a rock garden or even the center of the yard. Once this area has been designated, the rest of the design process can easily flow from one point to the next, rather than randomly placing items. The key to a successful landscape is having a fluid visual movement within the space. Using Patio furniture is a great way of adding style to a garden. Some perfect items that can instantly add dynamic to a backyard and create that visual focus includes a Fountain,  Tiki Bar, Tiki statue, Palapa or Thatch Umbrella or even a garden bench.

Another key element in creating a tropical backyard is adding exotic vegetation such as palm trees and tropical flowers. The lush environment and vibrant colors will emanate a warm and inviting feel.

Once you have the greenery and focus point, accessorizing is all you need to do next. Items such as bamboo poles, borders and rugs are the perfect accents to fill garden areas or line your patio floor. If you have an industrial or wooden fence that needs replacing or work, an economical way to instantly give your fence a face-lift and brighten your yard is by using bamboo fencing.

Finally one of the most important aspects to any decorating project is lighting. How your space is lit will affect the atmosphere. Tiki torches, outdoor lanterns and fire pits all do an excellent job at creating a warm and relaxing environment, while lighting walkways and accenting key visual points in your backyard.
Although redoing a backyard can seem like a monumental task, it doesn’t have to be. The key is to find simple key pieces that will give a big visual change and accessorize as you go along.  Have fun, be creative and ask questions.

Deforestation, Environmental Effects and Hopes for Change.

July 1st, 2009

“Take care of the earth and she will take care of you.” ~Author Unknown

The topic of going green and addressing environmental issues is ongoing,  especially poignant and trending within this past decade.  From pollution, to waste management and the earth’s drastically deteriorating resources, the amount of information and list of issues can be overwhelming.   What is helping in healing the earth and regenerating resources are the positive and mindful everyday decisions on how we interact with the planet.  As an example within the past thirty years Los Angeles has almost doubled in the amount of cars on the road, yet the amount of air pollution has declined by almost half and the hole in the ozone layer is not getting bigger but actually slowly decreasing in size.   Though this is just a small piece of the puzzle, it shows hope and promise that positive change can take place.

Deforestation is another urgent environmental issue.  Though the term is recognized and defined as the immense reduction of forests, it is more specifically defined as the logging or burning of trees in a forested area.  Most of the trees cut/burned are used for fuel, building materials and to clear land for farming purposes.  With natural resources being stripped faster than they can be replaced, we want to discuss the causes, consequences and some possible solutions to deforestation.

Causes – Statistics
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, deforestation can result from “a combination of population pressure and stagnating economic, social and technological conditions.”  Wood from the trees, and farming land serve as an economical benefactor to many countries where alternate resources and land may not be readily available.

“According to the World Resources Institute, more than 80 percent of the Earth’s natural forests already have been destroyed” Since 1900, up to 90 percent of West Africa’s coastal rain forests have disappeared, and there is an alarming rate of deforestation in Brazil and Indonesia, which contain the world’s largest surviving regions of rain forest (National Geographic).

About one half of the forests that covered Earth are gone. Each year, another 16 million hectares disappear.” According to the World Resources Institute, only about 22% of the world’s original forests remain “intact”

Consequences
Because 70% earth’s land animals and plants live in forests, deforestation affects the population and habitat conditions.  Without rain forests, the rain cycle dramatically becomes affection with then in turns generates drought situations. Studies have shown that destruction of rain forests in West African countries as Nigeria, Ghana, and Cote d’Ivoire may have caused two decades of droughts in the interior of Africa, with attendant hardship and famine. (National Geographic)

In addition to the affects on animals and habitat, climate is also affected by carbon dioxide released by the burning of trees.  Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane which are usually absorbed by trees, lead to global warming and drastic climate changes.

What Can We Do?
Reforestation – Plant trees. For every tree that is cut down, another tree should be planted. Trees are a great source for our oxygen and also help to absorb the carbon dioxide that humans and animals exhale. By reducing carbon dioxide, we are diminishing greenhouse gases; hence helping with global warming.
Humans should be able to control their own activities. We should seek a greener earth. “Major causes of tree loss and the expansion of deserts are stripping land of its natural cover for firewood and for growing crops, poor farming techniques, over-grazing, large-scale commercial logging, and depleting groundwater” (National Geographic).
As individuals, we should make more conscientious choices on what products to buy or what actions to take. Buying recycled products and consuming organic products is a good way to start.

How Does Bamboo Help

A way to slow deforestation is by planting bamboo. Because Bamboo is a fast growing plant, it can quickly replenish a forest stripped of timber. Environmental damage rate is increasing, overlogging and failure to replant causes soil erosion and eliminates wildlife habitat.

According to Ching Ong, water specialist at the International Center for Research in Agroforestry in Kenya, bamboo is a promising substitute for wood. Bamboo can grow 25 meters tall and 20 centimeters thick and can be grown all over the world with same qualities as timber. Bamboo can be harvested after 3 to 4 years and “then every year after that because it is a grass” as opposed to 5-20 years for traditional woods.

Based on the Hanoi-based Prosperity Initiative, a shift toward more bamboo production by small scale farmers in Vietnam could bring 750,000 people out of poverty by 2020. It could also help provide worldwide demand for timber as a building material (Ecoworldly).  Agricultural efficiency – Bamboo is the fastest growing woody plant in the world, crop can be replenished quickly. Bamboo is also self-regenerating, this means that it rapidly regrows from the remaining rootstock.  Bamboo could be used as a suitable replacement for timber as building material. It is extremely light weight and durable (Ecoworldly).

In addition because Bamboo has a wide spread root system and large canopy, it reduces rain run off which in turn aids in the reduction of soil erosion and maintains two times the amount of water in the watershed.  Bamboo also consumes large amounts of nitrogen, which aids in the reduction of water pollution which comes from “excess nutrient uptake of waste water from manufacture, intensive livestock farming, and sewage treatment facilities.” (Meng Chang)

There is no doubt that we have a vast amount of changes and issues to address, but by making conscious decisions in our every day life and garnering the proper knowledge to make these choices, it has already shown effect that change is possible.

Choosing the Right Outdoor Furnishings

June 10th, 2009

11When it comes to a house, it’s often forgotten that “home” extends beyond just the walls, windows and doors. Our front and backyards are an extension and reflect the style and care of the home we live in. Whenever planning a new landscape or outdoor design project, one of the most important aspects in outdoor decor is furnishing. Depending on the size of your outdoor space, there are various types of outdoor furniture and possibilities to best suit your needs. Just like when you first start a landscaping project, with choosing outdoor furnishings you must start with main focal areas. Main focal areas could be entertainment spaces, structures, or even a visually stimulating accent to your space. Here are some great, economical and eco-friendly ideas for furnishing your outdoor space.

Tiki Bars- Barstools

21

Tiki bars add a tropical and fun flavor to any backyard. They provide a central location perfect for conversations, serving drinks and entertaining. Tiki bars create a visual dynamic by providing a point of interest for eyes to be drawn to, without taking up too much space. Another great feature is while you are grilling food on the barbecue, the Tiki bar can help conserve BBQ counter space by providing an area to serve drinks and snacks from. Various Tiki bars come with drawer space, rear shelving, and you can even place hooks to hang cups or tropical decor from. Some great accessories include Tiki signs, colorful tropical figures, wind chimes or even lights. Pair your Tiki bar with some Bamboo barstools and you have a complete space for entertaining guests.

Thatch or Umbrella Kits

31

One “green” factor in installing outdoor coverings and structures such as thatch umbrella kits or bamboo patio roofings, is that they help in keeping your home cool by providing shade, or warm by blocking winds and insulating heat. This aids in reducing the use of energy and in turn also saving you money. Mexican Thatch is a great way to give your backyard that big makeover, without the big budget.

After choosing your main point of focus, decorating the rest should be easy. The idea is to work around your dudget and to keep your landscape un-cluttered, simple and inviting. Outdoor furniture such as bamboo benches, rugs and lawn chairs, or Tiki stools, can create a relaxing and unique island environment without taking up too much space, requiring too much upkeep, or being the typical type of backyard furniture. The idea with outdoor furnishing or any type of landscape decor is to create a space you can escape to and enjoy.
